振り返れば10年間、iPadに触らない日があっただろうかというレベルで代々iPadを愛用している私です。
（マジでないかもしれません。旅行先でも絶ッ対持ってくし…）
先日まで12.9インチiPad Pro（第3世代）をメイン機で使っていました。
今までずっと「動画視聴 7：お絵描き 3」くらいの用途で愛用していたのですが、最近は仕事でも使うシーンが増え「用途でiPadを分けたい」と思い、この度12.9インチiPad Pro（第6世代）を追加購入しました。
趣味と仕事の兼用で特に辛抱ならなかったのが写真周り。
職場で資料とかに混ざってプライベートの写真とか出てくるのヒヤッとするんですよね…。
その逆も然りで、休日に仕事のデータが混じってるとシンプルに萎えてきます。
全ては心の健康のため、必要経費です。
そんな経緯を経て今回購入したモデルは「12.9インチiPad Pro（第6世代）Wi-Fi 256GB シルバー」と「12.9インチiPad Pro（第6世代） 用Smart Folio」の2点。
冒頭でも触れましたが物価上昇も相まって計¥204,600（本体¥188,800+カバー¥15,800）と手痛いお買い物になりました。
これでもまだまだエントリーモデルで、最上位モデルにオプションをコテコテに付けると¥468,280まで上がります。価格設定した人は一回冷静になろう。
そんな訳で発売日から数日使った感想と共に、ゆるーく本音レビューをしてみたいと思います！
特に動画でもないのに防音室の中からお届けします。
いざ開封の儀！外観をチェック
事前にプレスリリースの噂があった日の深夜に張り付いていた甲斐もあり、発売日に着弾しました。
まぁ結局仕事が忙しくなってしまって記事にできたのがこのタイミングなんですけど…。
厚さに関しては今までの第3世代が5.9mmだったのに対して第6世代は6.4mmと微増してます。
前情報で知っていたので「どうなのかなー」と思っていたんですが、流石に実機を触ってもよく分からないレベルでした。
近年のiPhoneは背面カメラの出っ張りがよく指摘されてるけど、こっちは大分控えめな印象。
iPhoneと違って純正カバーのカメラ穴に出っ張りがないのも◎
前世代と共通なので特別Smer Folioについて話す事もないのですが、逆にいえば第4・5世代のiPad Proを使っているなら買い替えは不要です。
自分は第3世代なのでカメラ穴が合わず追加購入に。
iPad Proの背面に予め内蔵されている102個のマグネットのおかげで、カバーを近づければバチッと定位置でしっかり装着できます。
…そんな数のマグネット入れる必要、ある？
なんで12.9インチに拘るのか
12.9インチを購入するのは今回で4回目になります。
第1世代、第2世代、第3世代、そして今回の第6世代。
第4世代と第5世代の時はシンプルに金欠でした。
なんで今回も執拗に12.9インチに拘るのかというと理由は3つ。
- A4サイズまでほぼ等倍で見れる
- ミニLEDディスプレイ
- リファレンスモード
この3つはいずれも11インチiPad Proじゃ絶対に駄目なんですよね。
A4サイズまでほぼ等倍で見れる
これめちゃ重要なんです。
自分は製作したものをデータ納品で印刷所に送る事がちょくちょくあるのですが、12.9インチなら仕上がった作品をA4までほぼ等倍で見れるんです。
B5の作品ならスッポリ収まります。
PCのディスプレイと違って、丁度手に持って印刷物の様に扱えるのも◎
ミニLEDディスプレイ
11インチと12.9インチの2サイズ展開のiPad Proですが、正味1.9インチしかサイズに差がなくSoCも共通なのに、¥48,000も価格差がついている理由はなんなのでしょうか？
その答えは恐らくディスプレイにあります。
11インチは「液晶ディスプレイ」で、12.9インチは「ミニLEDバックライトディスプレイ」と全然作りが違うんです。
液晶ディスプレイは映画のフィルムみたいに「カラーフィルム」を直下の「バックライト」で照らして表示する仕組みになってます。
バックライトが一枚板になっている液晶と違って、ミニLEDは10,000個以上の細かーいLEDが敷き詰められており、照らす必要がある部分だけ発光させられるんです。
黒いところも下が光っているせいで若干グレーになってしまう液晶ディスプレイと比べて、下が一切発光してないミニLEDディスプレイは本当の真っ黒が表現できるわけです。
分かりやすい様に部屋を暗くして比較してみましたが、別に明るい場所でも色の違いはハッキリ分かるレベルです。
＿でも思いませんか？
「それってiPhoneみたいに画素自体が発光する有機ELの完全下位互換なんじゃないの？」って。
だってバックライトがいくら細かくても画素数と一緒じゃなければ、結局黒いところの直下を照らしちゃう場所が出ちゃうじゃないですか。
実際ミニLEDが黒い場所照らしたり照らさなかったりする事で起きる色滲み「ブルーミング」が指摘されてたりします。
結局のところ「有機ELになるまでの橋渡しに過ぎないのかなー」思って調べてみたところ、ちゃんとこちらを採用した理由がある様子。
黒い部分については先述の通りですが、白の再現性はミニLEDの方が優れているんだとか。
真の黒さを追求しつつ、明るい色の表示を犠牲にしないもいうのがミニLEDという訳なんですね。
後述する「リファレンスモード」に、この再現性っていう部分が繋がってくるのだと思います。
まぁ将来的に同様の色を有機ELが達成したら、こちらに置き換わっていくのでしょうね。
リファレンスモード
次にミニLEDディスプレイを搭載した12.9インチiPad Proの専用機能である「リファレンスモード」についてのお話。
皆さんは「マスターモニター」という、色の最終調整に用いられるガチのプロ機材をご存知ですか？
ちなみに僕はあんまり知りません。
色が重要な映像や印刷に関するお仕事の現場で用いられる用途のディスプレイを「カラーマネジメントディスプレイ」と呼称されているのですが、それの最上級みたいな存在が「マスターモニター」です。
スタジオとかにある憧れのマスターモニターって相場300〜600万円くらいで、これに一度憧れると中古市場で出回っているマスターモニターを舐める様に眺める日々を送ることになります。

して、この水準のコントラストやP3広色域を備えたXDR品質（ HDRよりさらに上）の画面を持っているiPad Proを“本当にカラーマネジメントできる様にしちゃえ”という新機能が「リファレンスモード」という訳です。
勿論タブレットの画面サイズですから使用感は全く変わってくると思いますが、ここまでのお話で相当リーズナブルなのが伝わったんじゃないかと思います。
しかもこの機能、iPad単独で使用できる他、Apple Silicon搭載のMacならセカンドディスプレイとして、カラーキャリブレーションも予めバッチリな状態で使えちゃうとの事。
以上が個人的に差額があっても12.9インチに拘った理由になります。
余談ですが12.9インチが大きくて大満足！…している訳ではなくて、例えば14インチとか16インチとか更に大画面モデルが出ようものなら秒で買い換える腹づもりです。
液タブとしても12.9インチって普通に小さ過ぎるしね…。
Macの最新チップ！M2がやってきた
前世代からiPadはiPhoneと同じSoCに、iPad ProはMacと同じSoCと差別化されました。
今回はMacの最新SoC（≠最強）であるM2チップがiPad Proにもやってきたという訳です。
SoC（システム ・オン・チップ）とは
ある目的のために必要な要素全てを載せ・かつ単体でシステムとして機能するよう設計されているチップのこと。
M2チップには8コアのCPU、10コアのGPU、16コアのNeural Engine（機械学習）、メディアエンジンなどが組み込まれています。
これにより個人的になにより嬉しいのが、愛用しているイラストアプリの「Procreate」の最大レイヤー数が激増した点。
正確に言うとM2チップが…と言うよりは横にくっ付いてる「ユニファイドメモリ」の恩恵なのですけど、お互いがなければ機能しないのでセットで考えて問題ないでしょう。
ポスターやフライヤーなど納品データのサイズが大きな物を製作する際に、キャンパスサイズが大きい程最大レイヤー数が減っていき、作業中にレイヤー統合に迫られるシーンが多々ありました。
第3世代のA12Xチップと、第6世代のM2チップによるレイヤー数の比較は以下の通り。

増え過ぎわろた
そもそもレイヤー数が多くなってくると、稀にアプリが落ちたりして不安定になるシーンもあったりするので性能強化はシンプルに嬉しいところ。
ちなみにアプリが落ちても自動保存なので作業データにダメージがあった事はProcreateを7年くらい使っていて1度もありません。助かる。
…と、レイヤー数でパフォーマンスも比較してみましたが、グラフで見せられてもブログとしてはなんかこうパッとしないですよね…。
しかしながらiPadでゲームも動画編集もしないので「何か速さを可視化できるところはないもんかなぁー」と探しあぐねていると…
ありました。
ストレージの解析画面なんですが…
かぁ～、これよ
データ移行直後でデータ内容が全く同じ内に並べて解析速度を比較してみました。
というか第3世代もこれめちゃ早いんですけど、第6世代が異次元的なんですよね。
あと動画だとより背景の黒さが全然違うのが分かりますね。
第6世代専用機能！「Apple Pencilによるポイント」
今回のiPad Proはイベント開催ではなくプレスリリースだけでかなりサラッと発表された、誰が見てもマイナーチェンジという印象だと思います。
新モデルが出たら購入を決めていた自分としては「なんか一個…！なんか一個M2チップ以外に新要素が欲しいなぁ…！」と思っていた矢先、発表ビデオにて突然紹介された新機能…それが「Apple Pencilによるポイント」です。
「Pencil Hover」みたいな名前にした方がカッコよくないだろうかと思うのですが私だけでしょうか。
なにやらペンタブレットみたいにペン先を画面の1.2 cmまで近づけると、ペン先が当たる地点のプレビューや、動画サムネイル上に重ねると再生プレビューなんかもできちゃうという代物。
画面に接触するまでにiPad Proが事前に角度や距離を感知しながら待ち構えるので、作画精度の向上が期待できそうですね。
画面からの距離が物理的に遠くなるガラスフィルムとかにも有効だったりするのかな？
まぁ保護フィルム大嫌いマンなので試さないんですけどね。

早速Apple Pencilを画面に近づけてみると…うわ！
アプリが吸い付いてくる！（？）
動作としてはiPadにトラックパッドやマウスを接続した時と全く同じ挙動。
なるほど、これならこの新機能のためにアプリ側が対応させるために手直ししなくても済む訳ですね。
この機能に関してはぶっちゃけるとこれ以上の恩恵はアプリがどう活かすのか次第なので、利便性が広がっていく今後に期待という感じ。
個人的にはイラストを描く時にペン先のポインター表示は邪魔に感じる派なので、今のところ特に恩恵は感じてません。
現状アプデ待ち！外部ディスプレイに本気（マジ）
iPad新製品と合わせてiPad OS16がリリースされ、一部のiPadでアプリのフローティングウインドウ表示「ステージマネージャ」に対応しました。
同時にmacOSのもステージマネージャが搭載されたので、Macと同じ操作感でマルチタスクができるようになった感じです。
でも個人的にはそこはどうでも良くて（ひどい）、この機能の副産物として外部ディスプレイを全画面で使える様になるという点に注目しています。
写真App内の写真や動画の表示などこれまで極々極々極々一部でしか全画面で表示に対応しておらず、iPadの画面比3:4のまま16:9のディスプレイに接続すると、左右にぶっとい黒帯ができるんですよね。
遂にiPad登場から12年を経て、この黒縁がなくなって全画面を扱える様になる訳です。
自分は先述の通りカラーマネジメントディスプレイを使っているのですが、これがThunderbolt3/USB-C接続に対応しているので変換アダプター無しで手軽に接続できるんです。
とはいえ現状は利用できず、次回のiPad OS16.2で実装予定との事。
付属のUSB-Cケーブルがファブリックに
見出しが全てですが付属のUSB-Cケーブルがファブリック素材で覆われており、強度が上がっただけでなく絡まりにくく黄ばみにくく、尚且つ経年劣化でベタつきにくくなりました。
もう良い事づくめ。

ちなみにiPad Proの端子はThunderbolt3/USB 4対応となっていますが、付属ケーブルはUSB3.0なので充電以外で利用するのはちょっと微妙だったりします。
本当に余談ですが世間ではEU全域で販売禁止が決まって、なんやかんやLightningケーブルへの風当たりがめちゃ強いですよね。
個人的にはUSB Type-Cコネクタって年単位で繰り返し使っていくと端子部分がスッカスカになるからあんまり好きじゃなくて、反対にLightningコネクタは小気持ちいい「カチッと感」がずっと続くのが魅力だと思います。
毎日の様に抜き差しするものだからこそ、ここって馬鹿にできないところだと思うんです。
今回レビューしているiPad Pro（第6世代）と同時に発売されたiPad（第10世代）に関しては初めてLightningからUSB-Cに変更されましたが、転送速度がUSB2.0だったりして「それどうなの？」って思ってたりします。
令和の最新デバイスで480Mbpsって…、ねぇ？
あと個人的にLightningで叩かれるべくは外部出力の最大解像度だと思っています。
iPhoneをMacに接続して画面収録したり、純正アダプタでHDMIに変換してテレビに接続しても最大解像度が10年以上1600 x 900とかいう、1080pですらない謎サイズなのどうにかならなかったんでしょうか。
コネクタの形状よりはこの謎解像度をなんとかして欲しい…。
そんな矢先に今回のステージマネージャが登場した訳で、これからiPhoneにも同じ様に外部出力のテコ入れが入ることを期待してます。
まとめ：12.9インチiPad Pro（第6世代）は買いなのか？
結論から言うと12.9インチiPad Pro（第3世代）以降を使っている場合は買い替えなくていいと思います。
流石にマイナーチェンジ過ぎるのと、そもそも第3世代が全然現役で耐えうるパフォーマンスだからです。
対してそれ以外のiPadを使っている方や、自分みたいに買い足しを検討している方には「値段に見合った価値がある」と思うので、予算が許せば素直におすすめしたいというのが本音です。
